ONC Reports No New Changes for Stage 2 Meaningful Use

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) recently refused to explicitly discuss changes to the Stage 2 meaningful use compliance timeline.

A written response was issued to an anonymous attendee who posed the question at the American Medical Informatics Association Annual Symposium.

Although ONC has the authority to issue changes to Stage 2, the regulatory requirements that would need to precipitate such a change, including a follow-up public comment period, make the proposed task a significant challenge.

The estimate is that the process needed to make changes to Stage 2 of meaningful use would require an additional year. Jacob Reider, acting national health IT coordinator commented that ONC is currently working to shore up health IT adoption among independent community hospitals and smaller physician practices.
