mHealth Booming as Regulators Eye the Landscape
Projections see 500 million smartphones on the market by 2015 and mobile applications are changing the way consumers interact with their healthcare data in substantial ways.
The landscape of mobile technology development is shifting rapidly, with new apps emerging on almost a daily basis. Whether the FDA or Congress will emerge as the key regulatory player has yet to be determined.
Jeffrey Shuren, MD, Director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health at the FDA is positioning his agency as the key bellweather for mHealth regulation, claiming that “We’ve been regulating apps for 15 years.”
Congressional leaders has recently laid their own claim to mHealth technology development as well. Regardless of who steps forward to guide this dynamic landscape, the clear winner is the smartphone-using consumer, who has become increasingly reliant on handheld devices for a growing range of medical needs.
