Cigna and University Hospitals Form New ACO
Healthcare giant Cigna and University Hospitals Accountable Care Organization announced recently the launch of a new accountable care initiative. University Hospitals ACO was first formed in 2011. Roughly 10,000 paitents covered by Cigna will be eligible to receive care from the physician and specialist network of more than 1,500 currently employed by Cleveland-area University Hospitals.
Prevention, wellness, and an incentive program that rewards physicians for continued patient health are said to be the goals of the collaborative arrangement. Patients managing chronic illnesses like hypertension and diabetes are likely to benefit most speedily from the new accountable care agreement.
Cigna continues to work toward its goals of 100 ACO partnerships by 2014, with its eye on covering 1 million patients under similar agreements.
