Big Data presents Big Challenges

A new survey, published by the eHealth Initiative and the College of Health Information Management Executives examined the opportunites and challenges ahead in the applications of Big Data.

Of 102 healthcare professionals polled, nearly 80% acknowledged the importance of Big Data initiatives, but 84% called the applications of tools in patient data aggregation “a significant challenge.” Only 45% of those included in the survey responded that their organizations had a “flexible and salable” Big Data strategy.

As more health systems, hospitals, and private practices move over to electronic health records, the amount of patient data being aggregated is voluminous.  The opportunites to achieve better health outcomes applying that data remain elusive as the stakeholders involved approach the challenges on respectively different footings.
