A Modular Approach to California’s HIE

California-HIE-270A new tactic was recently proposed by the California Office of Information Integrity for health information exchanges operating in the state.

The idea is to support a trust framework that works between multiple health data communities, connecting providers to both RHIOs and HIEs — as well as fostering connections between them.  The goal remains to support a uniform code of connectivity between both large and small organizations.

“Point-to-point agreements are obsolete,” said Robert Cothren, technical director of California Health eQuality, a program of the University of California, Davis Institute for Population Health Improvement that’s overseeing state HIE efforts. “Trust must be scalable.”
