Will Yu

Wil Yu joined HHS in 2009, leading departmental innovation efforts. Within the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), he leads several innovation and research programs and is the Director of the Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects (SHARP) program, which funds breakthrough developments in health technology. The program seeks dramatic improvements in the quality and efficiency of care especially in clinical support, applications development, security/privacy, and the expanded use of EHR data.

He is also a Senior Advisor at the newly formed CMS Innovation Center (CMMI), assisting with initiatives supporting the exploration of new approaches to the development and testing of innovative care delivery and payment models. A key component of health reform, the Innovation Center will drive better care for individuals, improve care coordination, and promote community care.

In collaboration with HHS’ CTO and the White House Startup America initiative, he leads the DC-to-VC effort – promoting market development, entrepreneurship, and investment in health technology through targeted engagements between policy-makers, innovators, and investors.

Wil co-founded the Federal mHealth Collaborative, advancing the development of national mHealth policies and programs and is on the HHS Innovation Council. He was formerly Director of Research for the Health Technology Center, where he launched various health technology forecasting programs. The center provided a rich array of forecasts, decision tools, and conferences supporting the deployment of new technology and examining the impact of disruptive health technologies.

Wil was previously a corporate finance associate at an investment bank focused on M&A and equity offerings and an equity analyst covering health care. Additionally, he was previously a VP of Marketing and Business Development for an ambulatory care EMR vendor and an academic researcher analyzing health care markets at UC Berkeley.
