Physician-Owned Hospitals Thriving Under ACA Quality Programs
Doctor-owned hospitals have secured substantial bonuses from the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) new quality programs. ACA legal language banned construction and expansion of these facilities due to criticism that they perform unnecessary tests and often direct the most well-insured cases to their facilities.
Kaiser Health News reported that of 161 physician-owned hospitals eligible to participate in ACA quality improvement programs, 122 of them are receiving additional incentives, while 39 stand to lose funds. Among other hospitals, 74% are being penalized for failing to live up to federal quality metrics.
