New Maryland proposal seeks to cap hospital spending, boost care coordination

maryland-cost-containment-270An ambitious new proposal in the state of Maryland is receiving national attention from a captive audience, including President Obama.

The goal is to provide relief to employers and consumers by capping the growth of hospital costs at a limit dictated by the expansion of the economy, as well as rewarding caregivers for efficiency.

“This is a really exciting proposal,” said John McDonough, a Harvard University professor and former state legislator who helped design Massachusetts’ health-care overhaul. “It’s nationally significant.”
