Edward McGookin, M.D. is the Chief Medical Officer at Coastal Medical and practices general pediatrics at Coastal Waterman Pediatrics in East Providence, RI.
As CMO, McGookin is responsible for the oversight of all clinical activities at Coastal Medical. He will continue to improve the PCMH practice transformation process, implement and maintain the group’s standards of care; and collaborate with leaders, both internally and externally, to understand, manage and reduce the total cost of care for the Coastal population of 110,000 patients.
Dr. McGookin is actively involved in representing pediatric priorities within Coastal Medical including the implementation of Patient Centered Medical Home initiatives and the use of information technology in the provision of medical care through the use of the electronic medical record, the development of a patient-centered corporate website, and the implementation of a Patient Portal.
In addition to patient care and his administrative roles at Coastal, medical education has always been an area of particular professional interest to McGookin. He was the Director of Pediatric Education for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. Dr. McGookin has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards including the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the Rhode Island Monthly magazine’s “Top Doctors” award, and a participant in the Pediatric Academic Society’s Educational Scholars Program. He was an instructor in Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation, and Pediatric Advance Life Support. He was also the pediatric coordinator of the Memorial Hospital Simulation Program and used high-fidelity, computer-based patient simulators to train residents, medical students, and hospital staff in the recognition and stabilization of critically ill children.
McGookin attended LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY – BS Biology, and received his MD from State University of New York Health Science Center, Syracuse, NY.
